Journalists at The Athletic, a sports activities information web site owned by The New York Occasions, plan to unionize, they stated Monday.
A bunch of about 200 editors throughout the US has requested The Occasions to acknowledge them as a part of the Occasions Guild, which represents practically 1,500 members, together with reporters, editors and different editors on the paper.
The Occasions purchased The Athletic in early 2022 for $550 million. In July 2023 the paper stated it will dissolve its sports section and rely on protection from The Athletic.
“The work we do is union work, and we imagine we must be afforded the identical advantages and protections as Occasions Guild members beneath their present contract,” Katie Strang, senior investigative author for The Athletic, stated in a press release.
The Occasions Guild, which is affiliated with the NewsGuild of New York, represents reporters and a few editors at The New York Occasions. Tech employees at The Occasions and employees at Wirecutter, a product advice web site owned by the newspaper, are represented by separate bargaining items.
Occasions Guild leaders on Monday referred to as on the New York Occasions to acknowledge that “our colleagues at The Athletic are members of the Occasions Guild.”
If The Occasions doesn’t voluntarily acknowledge the Athletic employees as a part of the union, the NewsGuild of New York stated it will take the matter up with the Nationwide Labor Relations Board.
A Occasions spokesman, Jordan Cohen, stated in an electronic mail that the corporate is reviewing the request from The Athletic’s newsroom.
